Name:Cecilia Riddle
Bio:OOC INFO
Name/Alias: Kathryn
AIM: AriadnesYarn
E-mail: Anarkia19@yahoo.co.uk

CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Cecilia Rosalie Riddle
Age/Birthdate: 19 / October 17, 1905
Bloodline: Unsquibbed
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual, Cecilia is far too traditional to ever consider anyone but an attractive man as a partner.
Who does your character support? Certainly not Voldemort. Probably whoever is in the position of benefiting her the most.

Why this character: I am drawn to unusual and random characters and since I've never so much as seen her as a listed possibility, I'm of course sucked in! Plus, I love playing unsympathetic characters and trying to show at least find SOMETHING humanizing about them.

What is said about your character on the lexicon? Preciously little! She is the "pretty, snobbish girl on a grey horse that Tom Riddle was with when he rode past the Gaunt family shack." Only quote? "My God, what an eyesore!"

Look at the available/taken list and put which characters (at least ten names) that your character would interact or be familiar with: The latter ones are just guesses, poor Cecilia doesn't have a lot of obvious connections. Merope Gaunt (please!), Morfin Gaunt, Tom Riddle, Tom Marvolo Riddle, Petunia Dursley, Vernon Dursley, Dennis Bishop, Eileen Prince, Hepzibah Smith, Lily Evans.

PB: Haley Bennett

Personality:

Cecilia presents two faces to the world. Among those she considers her social equals, she is charming and well-mannered. She appears a kind and sympathetic friend, if perhaps a bit too easily impressed by mentions of townhouses and exclusive villas in Italy. She is the sort to remember birthdays and the names of friends' young children and inquire politely after such topics. Always ready with an perfectly worded compliment and sympathetic smile, she knows how to ingratiate herself in a wide variety of company. When Cecilia sets out to be charming, she almost always succeeds. She honestly believes wealthy and cultured people are superior and accordingly seeks friendships among the upper classes tirelessly. People who come from lofty stations tend to view Cecilia as a sweet, loving girl who is devoted to her family and friends. She seems to have boundless curiosity and is always an eager pupil for the latest opera score or political discussion. Despite her background, she is usually successful at passing herself off as a well-educated young woman who has seen more of the world than a single corner of England.

To her former family and those she deems inferior, Cecilia appears quite a different young woman. Haughty, judgmental, and cold, she does not bother to hide the disdain she feels towards people who never managed to rise from their own humble backgrounds. It is as if she feels that her own status depends on constantly disparaging those less fortunate and is, accordingly, vocal in these beliefs. The penury of her youth still grates on her and Cecilia fears nothing more than finding herself poor and alone. She is constantly on the make to ensure this fate does not befall her. Cecilia is capable of love and sacrifice but finds few people worth bestowing this lofty sentiment upon. So far, nearly all of her choices in life have been completely self-serving and motivated by her own ambitions alone.

In terms of strengths, Cecilia is resourceful and a consummate actress. Both of these skills have served her well in the past. She is quite intelligent and able to take the long-view when deciding a course of action. While she does not possess the sort of courage that would make her risk society's misapprobation or her own comfortable status, in terms of physical bravery Cecilia can be quite bold to the point of foolhardiness. She is willing to make great sacrifices if her goal is worthy enough.

If she has one penultimate weakness--aside from her ambitious nature and considerable vanity--it is her inability to judge other people. She trusts and admires people who are blessed with wealth, charm, or influence and tends to take their statements at face value. On the other hand, she dismisses out of hand individuals from humble backgrounds. As Cecilia has always been motivated by personal ambitions, she has a hard time understanding people with a different set of priorities and often misjudges the true goals or characters of those she encounters.

Family: If she would own up to them, people would know that Cecilia comes from a large family. She was the fourth of five children and had more cousins than she could possibly keep track of. She was fairly close to her siblings as a young girl but began to realize that they were--in her opinion--holding her back by the time she was eleven years of age. While she devoted her time to bettering herself they were content with their lots. Upon her marriage, she cut her ties with them entirely and now passes herself off as an orphan and only child whenever possible, normally dodging questions about her history.

Personal History:
Cecilia was spoiled as a child as much as her parents could afford to do so. While their other children were expected to work long hours on the tiny family farm a few miles from Little Hangleton, little Cecilia was permitted to concentrate on creating her fanciful dresses and serving tea to her dolls. Rather than appreciate her sheltered upbringing and favored status in the family, however, Cecilia simply grew increasingly unsatisfied with the penury of her life. While she was teaching herself French and carefully learning how to walk across the field without dirtying her white stockings, her brothers and older sister labored day and night to churn a pitiful profit from the land. She soon grew to resent her parents and siblings, blaming them unfairly for not taking similar steps to better themselves.

She had a passion for what she considered to be the finer things in life and would try to indulge her expensive tastes whenever possible. The pretty dresses, lavish dolls, and personal tutors that other girls her age enjoyed grated on her to no end. On more than one occassion, she would run home in tears, frustrated at what she could never have. Music and horseback riding were her twin obsessions and she pursued these interests as much as her circumstances would allow.

Young Thomas Riddle represented everything lofty, noble, and desirable in the world to Cecilia. While most of the villagers secretly despised his family for their snobbery, Cecilia would walk by their fine house daily, imaging with longing that she was a member of that illustrious family. The day Tom finally noticed her was by far the happiest of her existence. She felt as if his notice validated what she had always fervently wished, that she was different from her family and neighbors. His attentions confirmed that she had real value and she basked in the attention. Seeing handsome, cultured, and rich Tom Riddle take up with a girl even more destitute than herself horrified Cecilia to no end. It put into question everything she believed about herself and the society she so fervently wished to enter. Her parents could not understand why their daughter cried obsessively and refused to budge from her worried contemplation before the mirror for several days. Cecilia was beside herself over Tom's seeming preference for Merope Gaunt and no amount of flirting with the other young men of the village could put her to rights.

When she heard rumors of an actual pregnancy she nearly gave up all hope and resolved to go into the forest and drink hemlock rather than suffer the indignity of lowering herself to marry a mere farmer. Miraculously, however, Tom abruptly abandoned Merope, despite their reputed marriage, and returned to his parents' estate. She was only too happy to welcome his attentions once more, although she put on an air of wounded feelings for a time. With her life's ambitious realized, Cecilia spent the rest of what was to be a relatively short life doting on Tom and luxuriating in her new status. Ironically, the thing she had most longed for--to be a part of the Riddle family--was to be the cause of her death. She was killed as an afterthought when Tom's son by Merope, the man who would become Voldemort, slaughted his natural father and grandparents.

Samples.

Cecilia closed her eyes briefly, savoring the crisp white wine on her tongue for a moment before swallowing. Say what they would about her morals and mores, no one could ever accuse Cecilia of not enjoying herself to the fullest. She never felt farther away from her childhood than afternoons like this, lying indolently in the sun beneath a parasol while most of the world toiled away unendingly.

Sighing happily at the thought, she pointed her toes and reclined further into the whicker chair. A fly had the impudence to land on her nose and she brushed it away immediately, annoyed by the intrusion. It continued to circle around her head in a maddening motion and she reluctantly opened her eyes to regard the intruder with open hostility.

At her parents' house growing up, someone was always on hand to deal with insects. Cecilia's dainty white hands would never be sullied by dispatching them, that was a generally accepted principle around the house. No, she could rely on one of her brothers to appear to her rescue with a simple clap of the hands. An image came unbidden from the recesses of her mind of Matthew laughingly removing a ladybug that had landed on her hair and making some dreadful punning joke before gently setting the insect on the window-ledge.

A frown marred her lips at this crystal clear memory and she moved uneasily in the chair. What was that image doing in her mind? She liked to think that her formative years were a closed subject, sealed and locked away, never to be intruded upon again. Sighing again, louder this time, she forced herself to close her eyes once more and relax.
